How to Choose the Right Hair Colour for Your Skin Tone

The right colour doesn't fight your complexion, it lifts it. Here's how we read your skin tone, eyes and undertone to choose a shade that makes you look like the best version of yourself.

Choosing a hair colour isn't really about picking a shade you like in a photo. It's about finding the tone that flatters your complexion, the one that makes your skin look brighter, your eyes look clearer and you look well-rested without trying. That's why we never go straight to the colour bowl. We read your skin first.

Start with your undertone, not your skin colour

The single most useful thing to understand is undertone, the quiet warmth or coolness underneath your skin. A simple check is to look at the veins on your inner wrist in natural light. Bluish or purple usually means a cool undertone, greenish leans warm, and a mix of both is neutral. Your undertone matters far more than how fair or deep your skin is, because it's what your hair colour will either harmonise with or fight against.

Match warm to warm, cool to cool

As a rule of thumb, warm undertones are flattered by warm colours such as golden blondes, honey, caramel, rich coppers and warm browns. Cool undertones come alive next to ashy blondes, cool beiges, espresso and soft mushroom tones. Neutral undertones are the lucky ones, as they can usually carry both, which gives us lovely room to play. Get this balance wrong and even a beautifully applied colour can leave skin looking washed-out or ruddy.

Don't forget your eyes and natural depth

Skin tone is the headline, but your eyes and your natural hair depth fine-tune the result. Warm eyes such as hazel, amber and golden-brown tend to glow alongside warm colour, while cool blue or grey eyes sharpen against ashier tones. We also look at how far a shade sits from your natural level, because a colour that's only a few shades from where you started will always feel more believable and grow out far more gracefully.

Where balayage earns its keep

This is exactly why we love a bespoke balayage. Rather than committing your whole head to one flat shade, we hand-paint dimension, placing brightness where it lifts your face and keeping depth where it grounds it. That softness is incredibly forgiving across skin tones, and because the colour is woven through rather than blocked on, it flatters as it grows and never leaves a harsh line to chase.

The honest truth is that the best colour for you is something we work out together, in the light, looking at your skin, your eyes and your lifestyle, not from a swatch on a screen.
